Paul McIntyre is the host of ABC Radio’s ‘Medical Matters’ and has more than two decades of experience at ABC Radio. He is also a playwright and author. His book, Use It or Lose It, is a guide to remaining vital through mid-life and beyond.
While this conversation represents a slight departure from the usual fare on Future Squared, I figured it would bring a lot of value to listeners when it comes to both living a long and healthy life yourself, as well as caring for any seniors in your life who you may not be able to physically be with during this time of COVID-19.
We unpacked many topics from the book, including:
- Why body and mind is a false dichotomy
- What to eat for a ripe old age
- Exercise and mobility
- The connection between sleep, anxiety and neurodegenerative disease
- Community and the value of a flourishing social life
- Maintaining meaning after retirement
- The importance of learning
- Activities seniors can perform to ward off dementia
- How we can engage seniors and look after them during COVID-19
